Sorrentine inlaid table, mid-19th century – rich marquetry
A richly inlaid small table from the region around Sorrento (Italy). The city of Sorrento was already famous in the mid-19th century for its exceptionally fine inlaid and marquetry work, which was collected and exported throughout Europe. The local workshops mastered the art of combining a wide variety of precious woods – including walnut, maple, mahogany, and other fine-grained fruitwoods and hardwoods – into complex geometric and ornamental motifs.
The round tabletop of this piece features a particularly high-quality and symmetrically arranged star and diamond motif, framed by several rings of decorative inlays. The precision of the inlay work, the harmoniously graduated wood tones, and the exceptional depth of design are typical characteristics of the renowned Sorrento craftsmanship.
The tabletop is supported by a turned baluster base with three elegantly curved legs. A particularly clever detail: the small drawer is discreetly integrated into the frame, adding extra functionality to the table.
The table has been professionally cleaned and hand-polished with shellac, which brings out the natural depth and warmth of the wood. Overall, the piece is in very good and well-maintained condition.
