This large-format painting is by Josef Burger (1887–1966), a Munich artist best known for his landscapes and still lifes. Burger was a student of the renowned painter Leo Putz and his style significantly influenced South German painting in the early 20th century. His works move between Impressionism and realistically rendered nature observations, often featuring motifs from Upper Bavaria, Alpine landscapes, or floral still lifes.

This work depicts a social evening or night scene outdoors, richly detailed and narratively multifaceted. A festive group has gathered beneath an old tree; musicians are playing, guests are conversing – in the background lies a village with a church, atmospherically illuminated by the full moon. The combination of meticulously detailed figure painting, evocative lighting, and carefully composed landscape makes this picture a representative example of his skill.

Burger exhibited regularly at the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich between 1938 and 1944. Some of his works are now in public collections, including the well-known painting "Frisches Haff" in the Lenbachhaus in Munich.

The painting has been professionally cleaned, restoring its vibrant colors and depth. The stretcher frame has also been replaced, ensuring the artwork is conservatically stable and ready to hang.
