Rare small Rococo commode, cube marquetry, second half 18th century.

Rare small Rococo commode, cube marquetry, second half 18th century.
Two-drawer commode in a small format, also known as a "sauteuse" in this style. The body is curved on all sides and bombé, transitioning into slender, curved legs. The top plate follows the curve of the front, and the front edge is trapezoidally splayed — 71 cm at the front, 58.5 cm at the back.
The top plate and drawer fronts feature diamond or cube marquetry (parquetterie) made from contrasting precious woods: plum, lemon wood, and rosewood. The three-dimensional effect is created by the differing colors and grain directions of the individual diamond fields. The marquetry fields are framed by longitudinally veneered border zones; the sides are veneered in rosewood with a central mirror image.
The finely crafted original fittings are gilded bronzes: two pull handles with bow and wreath motifs per drawer, and a key escutcheon in a floral Rococo design. They have been cleaned; the gilding has been touched up with 22-karat gold leaf.
The commode is in very good condition, has been professionally restored, polished with new shellac, and is ready for living spaces.
