Biedermeier sewing table, solid cherry wood, circa 1825

Biedermeier sewing table, solid cherry wood, circa 1825
Biedermeier sewing table in solid cherry wood. The rectangular case rests on two curved side supports, which stand on flared feet and are connected by a wide crossbar. The underside of the crossbar features a carved pearl beading, which is the only decorative element structuring the simple form.
The top panel is designed as a flap and can be opened backward on brass hinges. The inside of the flap is covered with a lively flamed, mirror-matched veneer. The case is lockable; the lock is located in the front rail behind a dark key escutcheon, and the key is present.
The interior is divided into compartments: a wide central compartment is flanked on the left and right by narrower compartments, which are further divided into smaller sections. The division serves the practical purpose of the furniture – threads, needles, scissors, and handicraft materials could be stored separately.
The table has been restored and refinished with new shellac. It is ready for use.
